The Remodel of a Boutique Hotel by CURATED Design Studio
In the heart of La Crosse, WI, nestled along the serene banks of the Mississippi River, lies a newly transformed boutique hotel.
This historic preservation project has turned a former fish hatchery building into a modern retreat. This blog post delves into the intricate remodel of this boutique hotel by the talented interior design studio CURATED.
The Vision
The journey began when CURATED Design Studio was approached with the task of bringing the client's dream to life by fusing modern comforts with elements that reflected the locale's rich heritage. The head designers, Janelle Byus and Kristin Strangstalien, embarked on a journey to understand the aspirations for the hotel, wishing to create an atmosphere that not only distinguished the hotel but also offered guests an immersive experience that celebrated the cultural and historical essence of the area.
The Essence: Exposed Brick and Historical Charms
A pivotal moment in the renovation process was the decision to expose the original brick walls, a move that injected authenticity, warmth, and character into the spaces. This design choice was not just aesthetic but a deliberate effort to preserve and showcase the building's rustic texture and depth, adding a layer of historical charm that really comes through in the final result. Each room, named after a fairytale character, became a perfect canvas for thematic designs, allowing CURATED to subtly incorporate elements from the tales that inspired their names.
The Corridor: The Hua Trees Mural
The selection of our Hua Trees mural wallpaper in Grey for the hotel's corridors was inspired by a desire to weave nature's tranquility throughout the guest's journey within the hotel. Discovered by the hotel owners in CURATED's own boutique in La Crosse, WI, this mural became a key element in transforming the corridors into captivating transitional spaces.

In CURATED’s boutique, the Hua Trees wallpaper is hung in a subtly lit, curved hallway tucked beneath a winding staircase, bringing life to the shadowed space.
The wallpaper's serene landscape against the dusky hallways creates a path that transports guests into a serene outdoor setting, perfectly aligning with the hotel's overarching design ethos of blending the past with the present.
A Tale of Design
Every room at the boutique hotel is a testament to the meticulous care and thought put into the design. Each room is named after a historical figure who has been reimagined into a fairytale character by a French artist who was commissioned to paint one piece for each room.
The rooms not only maintain the historical integrity of the building with their original flooring and exposed brick, but also provide a modern feeling of comfort, art, and luxury.
The inclusion of velvet blackout drapery in every room ensures that guests can retreat into their own private cocoon, complemented by a plush mattress and soft fabrics for the ultimate comfort. The spa-like bathrooms, with their heated floors and vintage waterworks fixtures, ensure a rejuvenating experience when visiting the boutique hotel.
A Community Gem
This boutique hotel stands as a beacon of community pride, a successful fusion of historic preservation and modern innovation. The CURATED team, along with the owners, have poured their hearts into creating a space that honors the past while embracing the future. The hotel not only offers a unique stay experience but also serves as a versatile venue space, complete with a replicated 1946 antique backbar, an outdoor patio, and soon, a vintage garage bar.
Through the thoughtful blend of design elements, this boutique hotel emerges not just as a hotel but as a sanctuary that celebrates the beauty of storytelling, the charm of history, and the comfort of modern luxury.
